Improving Services to Child Victims of Sexual Assault in Prince Edward Island

News Release

October 13, 2017 - Charlottetown, PEI - Department of Justice Canada

Sexual assault can have serious and traumatic effects on victims and survivors, particularly when the victims are children. The Government of Canada is providing victims and survivors of child sexual assault with the services they need to improve their recovery and reduce the risk of developing problems in others areas of their lives.

Today, Sean Casey, Member of Parliament for Charlottetown, on behalf of the Honourable Jody Wilson-Raybould, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, announced $216,350 in funding to Child Protection Services of Prince Edward Island to train social workers and police in interviewing child victims of sexual assault, of different ages and abilities, in order to obtain accurate and reliable disclosures. The funding will also help develop child-friendly spaces where victims can feel comfortable talking about the offences committed against them and will improve the video-recording of these interviews so that they can be retained as records of the victims’ statement. These recordings are used throughout the criminal justice process, and the funding will also help ensure that the recordings are stored with the utmost security.

Quotes

“A well-functioning justice system is one that serves all Canadians, protects the vulnerable, and holds offenders to account. This funding will help children who are victims of sexual abuse talk about the crimes committed against them so that social workers, law enforcement and other professionals in the criminal justice system can provide them with the services they need and deserve.”

The Honourable Jody Wilson-Raybould, P.C., Q.C., M.P.
Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada

“Child and youth victims of sexual abuse have particular needs and challenges. The Government of Canada is proud to support Child Protection Services of Prince Edward Island in providing children of sexual abuse the special care they need to give clear and accurate statements of the offences committed against them.”

Sean Casey
Member of Parliament for Charlottetown

“Ensuring children’s voices are heard – when they need our help the most – is a top priority for child protection services in Prince Edward Island. This funding will ensure children can tell their stories in a safe and comfortable space. I am pleased that Child Protection Services took the initiative to apply for this grant, which will be used for specialized training in child abuse interviewing for social workers and police officers, and for upgrades to interview rooms and equipment.”

The Honourable Tina Mundy
