Defence Minister Harjit S. Sajjan Meets with US Secretary of Defense James Mattis

Building upon the strong defence relationship and previous bilateral meetings, Defence Minister Harjit S. Sajjan met today with US Secretary of Defense James Mattis to discuss a broad range of mutual defence and security priorities. At their meeting, Minister Sajjan reiterated Canada’s firm support to working with allies and partners on a diplomatic solution for denuclearization on the Korean peninsula that ensures security and prosperity.

Minister Sajjan and Secretary Mattis also reaffirmed their longstanding and ongoing support of the Ukrainian people, and of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The two defence leaders exchanged views on the future of peace support operations with Minister Sajjan emphasizing Canada’s commitment to helping ensure that UN Peacekeeping is an effective tool in responding to 21st century conflicts.

Minister Sajjan and Secretary Mattis also discussed their ongoing collaboration as part of the Global Coalition against Daesh and countering extremist organizations. The conversation provided an opportunity to discuss progress as the coalition explores next steps in promoting stability in the region.

Canada and the US are fully committed to continental defence and recognize NORAD as the cornerstone of our defence and security.
