FedDev Ontario Supports Clean Growth Manufacturing in Orangeville

News release

$5.6 million investment for rural manufacturer to scale up, commercialize first-in-Canada sustainable packaging, and create  jobs

September 6, 2019 — Orangeville, Ontario

Today, the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for FedDev Ontario, announced a FedDev Ontario contribution of up to $5.6 million to E. Hofmann Plastics Inc. (EHP), an innovator and manufacturer of ready-to-use plastic packaging solutions, to scale up operations.

Through this project, EHP will produce a first-in-Canada recyclable and compostable tray for meat packaging as well as recyclable coffee pods made from plant-based resins. FedDev Ontario’s investment will allow EHP to adopt state-of-the-art robotic technologies and equipment that will boost capacity, increase efficiency, and reduce energy usage in the production process. As a result, EHP will extend its sustainable packaging line to meet market demand from various food and beverage sectors, including meat packing, prepared meals, coffee, takeout, and food delivery.

With more than 185 employees, EHP is one of Orangeville’s largest employers. As a result of this investment to support rural innovation, EHP expects to bring 25 new, full-time engineering jobs to the local community, and to significantly increase supply chain spending in Ontario.

FedDev Ontario’s investment enables EHP to produce 100 percent biodegradable and recyclable products as an alternative to single-use plastics products. This aligns with the Government’s Canada-wide Strategy on Zero Plastic Waste—an action plan to protect the environment by reducing plastic pollution.
