Government of Canada and health partners announce $3.3M renewed investment to support transplantation research

News release

Investment will increase the availability of transplants and improve the long-term survival and quality of life of transplant patients

October 18, 2018 – Ottawa, Ontario – The Canadian Institutes of Health Research

Organ and tissue transplantation is a transformative treatment, saving or improving the lives of Canadians with organ failure, diabetes, and blood cancers every year. However, due to the complex barriers and side-effects that can accompany transplantation, there is a 50% transplant failure rate and high risks of complications from transplant medications. Moreover, the low rates of donation in Canada result in only 33% of patients on a waiting list receiving a transplant.

To help support a donation and transplantation system that gives Canadians timely and effective access to care, John Oliver, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health, on behalf of the Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister of Health, announced today at the Canadian Transplantation Summit renewed funding of $3,300,000 for the Canadian Donation and Transplant Research Program (CDTRP).

This funding is a joint investment from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Astellas Pharma Canada Inc., the Canadian Liver Foundation, Cystic Fibrosis Canada, the Fonds de recherche du Québec–Santé, and the Kidney Foundation of Canada. This investment will enable the CDTRP to continue advancing research that address the many facets of organ and tissue donation and transplantation in Canada and in the process effectively increase the availability of transplants for Canadians and transform clinical outcomes for transplant patients from coast to coast.

Quotes

“The Government of Canada is committed to fostering collaboration across research fields to develop an organ and tissue transplantation system that offers effective, timely and life-saving care to Canadians. This investment will fund research that increases the availability of transplants and improves the lives of transplant patients across the country.”
Ginette Petitpas Taylor
Minister of Health

“I am very pleased to announce today the renewed investment of $3.3 million to continue to support the Canadian Donation and Transplant Research Program. This network of talented researchers, collaborators and patient partners is working to save the lives of thousands of Canadians, and ensuring transplant patients receive the care they need.”
John Oliver
Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health

“The CIHR Institute of Infection and Immunity has strongly supported the CDTRP since its inception in 2013, and we are delighted to be able to continue this support. The CDTRP is among a few truly national programs in the world that has successfully mobilized researchers in organ and tissue donation and transplantation along with patients and families to save thousands of lives.”
Dr. Charu Kaushic
Scientific Director, CIHR Institute of Infection and Immunity

“This is a wonderful opportunity to continue the research that will bring great benefits to so many Canadians. Everybody knows someone who would benefit from an organ or cell transplant—especially if we start thinking of transplantation as a cure for blood cancers and many chronic diseases as well as for organ failure. This funding provides the structure and resources to respond to bigger research challenges and build on our successes.”
Dr. Lori West
Director, Canadian Donation and Transplant Research Program

Quick facts

  • The Canadian Donation and Transplant Research Program (CDTRP) is a national research network whose mission is to increase organ and tissue donation in Canada and enhance the survival and quality of life of Canadians living with a transplant.

  • The CDTRP is comprised of over 200 investigators, students, collaborators, patient partners and knowledge-users at 30 sites across the country.

  • The CDTRP was established in 2013, when CIHR and its partners provided $13.85 million to support the CDTRP’s formation, operations and research activities. The renewed funding of $3.3 million will continue to support the CDTRP research activities to ensure Canadian transplant patients have effective and timely access to the care they need.
