Go the extra mile to help your clients

Gloria Allen is a team leader for the Inuvik Service Canada Centre. She wanted to share what it looks like to help a community in the Northwest Territories (NWT), and all the challenges and uniqueness that come with it.

The town of Inuvik is part of the Beaufort Delta Region, which borders Yukon to the west, Nunavut to the east and the Arctic Ocean to the north. Inuvik is the third-largest community in NWT with a population of 3,463, and it’s also the region’s major commercial and administrative centre.

The community can count on a devoted team to help them access all of the benefits they are eligible for.

“I think we know that our job is to make sure our clients leave our office satisfied with the services that they received,” Gloria shared with us. If the Service Canada team is not able to fully help them, they try to help them to move on to the next opportunity they may have, or to another organization that may be able to provide them the assistance that they require.

To ensure that they help all the communities surrounding Inuvik, where the population is widely dispersed, the Service Canada Centre does scheduled outreach in the Beaufort region to assist people—especially in the fall and spring, since a lot of their clients have seasonal jobs during the winter. “So when they get laid off in the springtime from their winter activities, we have a lot of EI applicants. We also have a lot of applicants in the fall when they are waiting to go back to the winter season,” she observed.

She feels that the relationship she has with all the clients is what makes her experience at Service Canada so unique. They all know each other personally and professionally, and people are not shy to ask questions or to reach for help. It’s a relationship built on trust.
