00:00:00.767 --> 00:00:02.870 align:center line:-1
Carcajou, an army program

00:00:02.870 --> 00:00:05.172 align:center line:-2
open to Indigenous people
across Canada,

00:00:05.172 --> 00:00:07.908 align:center line:-2
recently took place
in Valcartier, Québec.

00:00:07.908 --> 00:00:10.444 align:center line:-2
Today, we're joined by Master
Corporal Laurence Séguin,

00:00:10.444 --> 00:00:12.246 align:center line:-2
recruiting assistant
for Carcajou,

00:00:12.246 --> 00:00:16.283 align:center line:-2
and some of this year's
participants to tell us more.

00:00:16.283 --> 00:00:19.920 align:center line:-2
The Carcajou program is a basic
military qualification

00:00:19.920 --> 00:00:21.955 align:center line:-2
that involves
Indigenous culture.

00:00:21.955 --> 00:00:24.458 align:center line:-2
The program is six weeks long,
during which time

00:00:24.458 --> 00:00:26.827 align:center line:-1
the youth develop leadership,

00:00:26.827 --> 00:00:29.363 align:center line:-1
discipline and self-confidence;

00:00:29.363 --> 00:00:32.199 align:center line:-2
subsequently they can return
to the community,

00:00:32.199 --> 00:00:35.102 align:center line:-2
without remaining
in the Canadian army,

00:00:35.102 --> 00:00:39.339 align:center line:-1
or choose to remain with us.

00:00:39.339 --> 00:00:42.743 align:center line:-2
What is also nice is that we can
grow up in a community,

00:00:42.743 --> 00:00:44.578 align:center line:-2
but sometimes we do not
involve our culture.

00:00:44.578 --> 00:00:47.781 align:center line:-2
So, during the six weeks,
the youth are accompanied

00:00:47.781 --> 00:00:49.416 align:center line:-1
by Indigenous consultants.

00:00:49.416 --> 00:00:51.485 align:center line:-2
They even get
to participate in powwows.

00:00:51.485 --> 00:00:55.255 align:center line:-2
They will also have the chance
to experience a cultural week,

00:00:55.255 --> 00:00:57.124 align:center line:-2
as well as other activities
over the weekends,

00:00:57.124 --> 00:00:59.893 align:center line:-2
which will let them return
to their roots

00:00:59.893 --> 00:01:02.829 align:center line:-2
and reconnect
with their culture.

00:01:02.829 --> 00:01:05.666 align:center line:-1
They go from the Culture Camp

00:01:05.666 --> 00:01:09.770 align:center line:-2
to the cultural military
training again,

00:01:09.770 --> 00:01:11.572 align:center line:-2
as there are
Indigenous consultants

00:01:11.572 --> 00:01:14.942 align:center line:-2
who will be with them
until the end of the course.

00:01:14.942 --> 00:01:16.844 align:center line:-1
It starts the first week;

00:01:16.844 --> 00:01:20.080 align:center line:-2
we had the chance to participate
in a cultural week.

00:01:20.080 --> 00:01:24.785 align:center line:-2
Then, we had the chance to go
to the museum in Wendake.

00:01:24.785 --> 00:01:27.754 align:center line:-2
After that, we went
to the powwow at Odanak.

00:01:27.754 --> 00:01:32.259 align:center line:-2
That let us learn
about various cultures

00:01:32.259 --> 00:01:35.495 align:center line:-2
because there were people
from all over Québec.

00:01:35.495 --> 00:01:39.433 align:center line:-2
So, we really learned a lot
about Indigenous culture.

00:01:40.934 --> 00:01:44.538 align:center line:-2
I would definitely
recommend this program

00:01:44.538 --> 00:01:48.108 align:center line:-2
for anybody who wants
to join the military,

00:01:48.108 --> 00:01:49.877 align:center line:-1
or even get the experience,

00:01:49.877 --> 00:01:52.145 align:center line:-2
or who even needs
personal development.

00:01:52.145 --> 00:01:54.414 align:center line:-2
I definitely recommend it,
yeah, for sure.

00:01:54.414 --> 00:01:58.819 align:center line:-2
This program helped me
discover my limits.

00:01:58.819 --> 00:02:01.455 align:center line:-2
I also discovered
a lot of strengths too.

00:02:01.455 --> 00:02:03.757 align:center line:-1
It really helped me grow.

00:02:03.757 --> 00:02:06.260 align:center line:-1
I really like that. We ran.

00:02:06.260 --> 00:02:08.862 align:center line:-1
We learned many different things

00:02:08.862 --> 00:02:12.132 align:center line:-2
that we had never learned
before. I really enjoyed that.

00:02:12.132 --> 00:02:14.101 align:center line:-2
I think that
what hit me the most

00:02:14.101 --> 00:02:17.204 align:center line:-2
was the resilience
of the participants.

00:02:17.204 --> 00:02:19.206 align:center line:-2
I am referring to everything
that happened

00:02:19.206 --> 00:02:20.841 align:center line:-2
since the beginning.
There are many

00:02:20.841 --> 00:02:23.911 align:center line:-2
who are going through
negative family situations,

00:02:23.911 --> 00:02:25.412 align:center line:-1
and they are still here today.

00:02:25.412 --> 00:02:27.114 align:center line:-2
They kept going with
their heads held high.

00:02:27.114 --> 00:02:29.149 align:center line:-2
They were determined
to finish the course.

00:02:29.149 --> 00:02:31.618 align:center line:-2
This incredible resilience
that they have

00:02:31.618 --> 00:02:34.087 align:center line:-2
really helped me to grow
as an instructor.

00:02:34.087 --> 00:02:36.390 align:center line:-1
It also let me further develop

00:02:36.390 --> 00:02:39.092 align:center line:-2
my learning and
teaching techniques

00:02:39.092 --> 00:02:41.328 align:center line:-2
to allow them
to finish the course

00:02:41.328 --> 00:02:42.829 align:center line:-1
with their heads held high.

00:02:42.829 --> 00:02:45.499 align:center line:-2
