From: Crystle Numan XXXX Sent: January-27-14 3:18 PM To: Consumer Code / Code consommateur Subject: Input into Financial Consumer Protection Framework Thank you for the opportunity to provide input. We work with low income families and individuals, newcomers to Canada and anyone in need of help. Regarding vulnerable populations, our experience shows that those with language barriers often have less access to ‘normal' financial options, and do not understand the ‘fine print' of the other options, most of which are much more costly and cause debt. Requiring simple language, an opportunity to back out of agreements if they were not understood, and more financial literacy programming would help. As well, lower income populations often are barred access to ‘normal' financial options, such as a bank because they do not have a fixed address, etc., and must turn to other options, many of which are much more costly and cause debt. Ensuring that everyone can access financial services for their needs without inordinate fees is critical or those with low income will sink further into debt, and may never be able to get out.
