From: XXXX Sent: February-01-14 11:38 AM To: Consumer Code / Code consommateur Subject: Insurance on Lines of Credit Cancelling insurance on my line of credit is unreasonably difficult. I received a phone call from XXXX trying to sell me insurance for my LOC. I was assured that I could cancel it at any time with no penalty, so I agreed. A few months later when I called XXXX to cancel it, I was told it could not be done over the phone. I asked whether I could send an email and was told that also wouldn't work. I asked whether I could visit a branch in person and was told that also wouldn't work. They only cancellation method they accept is to obtain some form from them, fill it out, then fax it to them. As hardly anybody has a fax machine anymore, this is unreasonable. I went to the branch, where a helpful person found the necessary form, filled it out for me, and faxed it on my behalf. XXXX still did not cancel my insurance, and when I called to inquire as to the reason, was told that apparently the form was not filled out correctly and I would need to do it again. If even an employee of XXXX can't easily figure out how to fill it out, how can customers be expected to? My recommendation is to encourage banks to allow insurance on lines of credit to be cancelled with either a phone call or an email, or by visiting a branch in person. At no point should a customer be required to fax anything as hardly anybody possesses a fax machine any more.
