Honorary Colonel Rory MacKinnon - Royal Canadian Air Force

Mr. Rory MacKinnon was appointed as Honorary Colonel to the RCAF Academy, Borden ON in March 2019.

Honorary Colonel (HCol) Rory MacKinnon and his family have owned and operated McDonald's restaurants in the Alliston, Angus, Schomberg, Caledon and Orangeville areas since 2004. HCol MacKinnon began his career with McDonald's as a member of the crew at the St. Laurent Blvd location in Ottawa in 1974 and remained with McDonald's throughout his post-secondary education and then into Restaurant Management training followed by employment with the Head Office where his career spanned the disciplines of Management Training, Operations and Field Service, Restaurant Development as well as Marketing and Information Technology. HCol MacKinnon was part of the teams that opened McDonald's in the SkyDome in 1989, and also created the first 108 McDonald's restaurants in Walmart locations across Canada in 1994. During his career with McDonald's he has been the recipient of numerous awards notably the President's Award in 2003 and the Ronald Award in 2014. HCol MacKinnon continues to serve on many National Owner Operator Leadership Forums.

HCol MacKinnon is very active in several communities serving on many of the community Business Improvement Associations, Chambers of Commerce and local Hospital Fundraising committees. He has been the recipient of the Chamber of Commerce Community Development Award in 2012, the South Simcoe Hall of Fame Award in 2013, and the Paul Harris Fellowship for service to Rotary in 2014. His restaurants have received numerous awards from McDonald's corporation for Operational Excellence.

In addition to HCol MacKinnon’s business acumen his passion is the bagpipes, which he began playing at the age of 10. He first learned to play the bagpipes as an Air Force cadet in Burnaby, BC. HCol MacKinnon is the Pipe Major of his local pipe band in Tottenham "The Clans of Tecumseth Pipes and Drums" and in addition to various performances and parades he is also the duty piper for local Remembrance Day ceremonies. He has traveled from Scotland to Shanghai to perform with various bands and is extremely proud of the honour to be the piper for the patriation and repatriation of the sacred soil from Vimy Ridge to the CFB Base Borden Legacy Monument and the Barrie Cenotaph.
