News Release

September 25, 2017– Bas-Caraquet, NB – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency

Strategic community infrastructure investments in rural communities help build on regional advantages, create new opportunities for business growth and generate new jobs. Thanks to a $10 million investment from the Government of Canada, the Province of New Brunswick’s Regional Development Corporation (RDC) will improve critical services to the fishing and boat building and repair industries in Northeast New Brunswick, maintaining close to 125 jobs and contributing toward the long-term development of the region.

Serge Cormier, Member of Parliament for Acadie-Bathurst and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), along with the Honourable Serge Rousselle, Regional Minister for Northern New Brunswick, made the announcement today in Bas-Caraquet.

This investment will enable the refurbishment of a railway dry-dock (slip way) and u-wharf, the purchase of a new travelling boat lift, as well as upgrades to the fire protection system and asphalt resurfacing in certain areas. These community assets are used by crab and lobster fishing fleets, as well as local shipbuilding and repair companies.

This project builds on the Government of Canada and the Province of New Brunswick’s commitment to work together to drive economic growth in Atlantic Canada through the Atlantic Growth Strategy. This strategy involves targeted actions to stimulate Atlantic Canada's economy, including supporting key infrastructure projects that support long-term growth and position the region to capitalize on emerging opportunities.
