Canada’s energy future

Building a world where the environment and the economy go hand in hand.

Canada’s energy future is now

The place to invest

Connected – Competitive - Clean

Canada’s goal is to be the world leader in clean tech. We rank fourth globally.

Investment in Canada creates jobs and spurs economic growth. That is why we are focused on making Canada the destination of choice for international investors. With 12 companies on the Global Cleantech 100 list, we are a hot spot for world leading innovation.

We welcome international investment and offer one of the most competitive tax and royalty regimes in the world, along with a highly skilled and educated workforce. Canada is also taking action to diversify its export markets, with two-thirds of the global economy now covered by free trade agreements.

We have made major investments in energy infrastructure and innovation, making Canada a supplier of choice in a world that increasingly values sustainable and clean energy products. This is about ensuring Canada remains competitive – now and in the future.

The clean energy leader to follow

Affordable – Reliable – Sustainable

Canadian energy already supports nearly one million jobs. As we build a clean energy future, that number will continue to grow. Canada is a leader in clean tech innovation. Investments from governments and the private sector are delivering new opportunities and more jobs for middle-class Canadians in large urban centres and in small, rural, and remote communities.

Canada launched the national Generation Energy Council of leading Canadians, who proposed principles to the Government of Canada on how to build our energy future. Today, these principles guide government decisions to support Canadian families, businesses, and communities.

Together, we are:

And making Canada’s economy more competitive and sustainable than ever before.

An energy future by Canadians, for Canadians

Partnering with provinces and territories

  • All provinces and territories in Canada have a price on carbon pollution
  • $2 billion Low Carbon Economy Fund launched by Canada and invested in provinces and territories to create the affordable energy and innovative jobs Canadians want
  • $5 billion available for renewable energy and efficiency in the new Canada Infrastructure Bank to partner in investments with provinces and territories

Collaborating with Indigenous peoples

Canada is improving its laws for how consultation and partnerships must happen when it comes to building energy projects in Canada. Respecting the rights of Indigenous people is essential in this country. We know that working with Indigenous peoples to find solutions will lead to better economic, social and environmental outcomes.

Building the energy workforce of tomorrow

The clean growth economy is underway in Canada. More training for new and emerging sectors, and more women and greater diversity, will make our workforce stronger.

Empowering Canadians’ energy choices

This year Canada will launch the Canadian Centre for Energy Information. For the first time, Canadians will have open and public energy information available. This will ensure Canadians and communities have the most reliable, transparent and science-based information, as the evidence base to make informed decisions.
