Transcript of Video message from the Honourable Bardish Chagger — Asian Heritage Month
Video length: 1:24 minutes
As a proud Canadian woman of South Asian descent, Asian Heritage Month and its celebration of the diversity of all Asian cultures means a lot to me.
This year’s theme is: Recognition, Resilience, and Resolve.
It’s about recognizing the contributions that communities of Asian descent in Canada have made, and continue to make, in building a more prosperous and equitable country—past, present, and future.
It’s about celebrating the resilience of communities of Asian descent who have faced racism and discrimination for generations. And, since the COVID-19 pandemic hit, we’ve seen a devastating rise in acts of anti-Asian racism, in addition to the disproportionate impact the pandemic has had on certain segments of society, including racialized and young Canadians.
And finally, it’s about resolving to do better. We must all step up as allies and stand together against xenophobia, hate fueled by misinformation, and all forms of racism and discrimination.
This Asian Heritage Month and beyond, please join me in honouring the significant contributions of communities of Asian descent in Canada and in denouncing all forms of anti-Asian racism.
Let’s all work together for a better and consciously more inclusive Canada.
Keep well and safe.
