About the LGBTQ2 Secretariat
A key priority for the Government of Canada is to strengthen diversity and inclusion so that all Canadians can participate fully as members of Canadian society.
The Government’s commitment to LGBTQ2 Canadians is a key part of this priority. The Government is committed to promoting LGBTQ2 equality, protecting LGBTQ2 rights, and addressing discrimination against LGBTQ2 communities, both past and current.
On November 20, 2019, the LGBTQ2 Secretariat, formerly housed at PCO, moved to Canadian Heritage. On that same date, the Prime Minister appointed the Honourable Bardish Chagger as Minister of Diversity and Inclusion and Youth, to be supported by Canadian Heritage.
Her mandate letter outlines her top priorities in support of the LGBTQ2 people and communities.
The LGBTQ2 Secretariat activities include working with LGBTQ2 stakeholders across the country. These activities help inform the Government on issues and potential solutions that are important to LGBTQ2 Canadians.
The LGBTQ2 Secretariat also works across federal public service to support the integration of LGBTQ2 considerations into the everyday work of the Government of Canada. These efforts focus on ensuring that issues related to sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression are taken into account in the development of federal policies, programs and laws.
To achieve this, the Secretariat works with public servants in different departments and agencies to help them apply inclusive approaches that consider the potential impacts of policies, programs and laws on Canadians of all sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions.
While the LGBTQ2 Secretariat is not a department and does not provide program funding, it helps link LGBTQ2 stakeholders with relevant federal organizations who do have funding opportunities available.
Note: The Government of Canada uses LGBTQ2 (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Two-Spirit) as the acronym for the official title of the Special Advisor and Canadian Heritage Secretariat. The acronym often used internationally is LGBTI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex).
