Team Ontario — Winterlude National Ice-Carving Championship

Sculpture title: Canadians coming together

Carvers: Suguru Kanbayashi and Kevin Ashe

Location: Ottawa, Ontario

For the first time, the Ontario team used perspective art to create their sculpture. It represents athletes and team Canada coming together at the Olympics and Paralympics to make Canadians proud. From the side, the layers are spaced apart and don’t seem to make much sense. As you move to the front, the pieces of ice come together like a puzzle. With more than 25 and 18 years of experience respectively, Kanbayashi and Ashe pushed the boundaries of ice sculpting hoping to inspire and have the public interact with their work, while inviting people to reflect on its subject.

Two athletes are floating in front of half of a large maple leaf. On the left, the first athlete is jumping while holding his snowboard with his right hand. Behind him, a speed skater in action seems to be heading straight for us.
