John Turner was a man of integrity and a deep understanding of the challenges facing our country. In the "free trade" election he took an extraordinary and important stand in favour of Canada's economic sovereignty, recognizing that we were bargaining away too much for what we were getting in return. While he lost the election, I believe he has been vindicated by history.
To Mr. Turner, Rest In Peace. To his family, friends and colleagues, our deepest condolences.

So sorry for your loss. Only met him once. Two life changing gifts.

Public Service. Today people say “they pay their salaries” and our crazy news cycle, John Turner knew that our world and humanity is bigger than each of us.

Human grace. A talented everything, I remember thinking as a kid that he was invincible. The human experience does not always play to script. Failure is noble. And grace even more.

Committed to channeling his service and grace....

While visiting Vancouver during the summer of 1984 I managed to obtain a life size Vancouver Quadra campaign sign of Mr Turner's (kindly donated by someone on the campaign team nailing signs to posts) taking it back to Ontario where it took up considerable space on my residence wall during my first year at the University of Guelph. It stayed with me that entire year and, I'm sure, encouraged my involvement in youth politics.

First of all my deepest condolences to the Turner Family and all of his family. The words gentlemen and statesmen, have been used often in the last week to describe PM Turner. He was a great man, whose like we will never seen. It was not his loss that he did not win the election to become PM. It was Canada's loss, it is a loss whose effects we still feel. But, he never said "I told you so". He just carried himself with dignity, and worked to make Canada better.

For a short time, I worked in a small grocery store located in Mr. Turner's neighbourhood. During his frequent visits to the store he addressed a long time cashier with the nickname that she was affectionately known, always inquiring after her health and about her daughter's life in the USA. Mr. Turner treated this Black woman as though she were family.

We first met John Turner in 1984, when he chose to run for a seat in the riding of Vancouver Quadra. We were living in that same riding, where no Liberal candidate had been elected in 25 years. We admired him for taking on the challenge, though our campaign buttons read:"Against All Odds!" His sincerity and resilience won the hearts of voters in Quadra. We remained in touch with him after he left office. We cherish our memory of a true Canadian who stood for his values, against all odds.

John's friendly personality and warmth always stood out. My wife and I enjoyed a conversation with him at a World Wildlife Fund Canada fundraising event in Toronto in March, 2009. John's face lit up when I recalled, as a Parliamentary Press Gallery reporter, travelling on his campaign bus one day during the 1984 election race. It was delightful to 'touch base' again at the WWF that night. John's commitment to the WWF was exemplary and much appreciated. Sincere condolences.

John showed us that it was ok to rise above our natural reticence as a people and to joyfully celebrate this country and all of its diversity from coast to coast to coast. I knew Mr. Turner in the late 1980s in Vancouver. I lived in his riding and worked on his campaign in 1988. He remembered everyone's name! He was friendly and kind. He treated everyone as if they were truly important to him. He was a great Canadian.

John Turner impressed me in my early twenties when he became leader of the Liberal party. His integrity and intellectual rigour were only enhanced by his authenticity and ready smile. John Turner was a rare kind of politician. He was a man of steadfast values.

He was generous with his time. I once had the privilege of spending a whole day with him in Scarborough at Cedarbrae Collegiate. He was witty, interesting, & captivated a room of teenagers. He stressed the importance of volunteering, to love your neighbours as yourself. His message resonated.

He understood that to lead was to lead by example, and he did: he inspired generations after him to be active citizens.

Sometime in the 1990s, I was riding the subway in Toronto, and John Turner was seated alone by the door across from me. He was wearing a suit and appeared to be on his way to work. As I stood by the door waiting for my stop, I nervously turned to him and said he was a great Canadian and a great prime minister. He smiled modestly, nodded and thanked me. John Turner was an honourable, distinguished Canadian who contributed much to making Canada a just society. My sincere condolences to his family.

My condolences to the Turner family. I was lucky enough to hear John Turner speak at a party convention some years ago, and his commitment to Canada was sincere and inspiring. Thank you for that, Mr. Turner.

As a Young Liberal I met Mr. Turner at Liberal conventions and worked on his campaign for the 1984 and 1988 elections. His passion, integrity and perseverance empowered me. He fuelled my love of Canada and democracy, and inspired me to work hard to make things better for all Canadians throughout my lifetime. Mr. Turner made many pivotal changes for Canada that we take for granted today.
I am so very thankful for him. He is missed.

My condolences to the Turner family. I met John Turner in the spring of 1993 while working at Miller Thomson. I always looked up to him with great respect. My best memories were when we spent many great conversations during dinner a number of times, followed by Hockey Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies. I was very lucky to know him and I will forever be grateful for his friendship. I will miss you John and never forget you.

As a young man, John Turner instilled in me a love for the history of my country and the valuable lesson of standing up for what you believe in. The ability to lead and inspire is remarkable and only a select few can do it as well as Mr Turner.

Mr. Turner would complete his long commute to the family cottage by being picked up at our dock in Kenora. We were proud and honoured to have met him; and sometimes passed the time of day as he waited for his boat ride to the island (there is a metaphor in there somewhere). On behalf of the Ivey family and the former employees at Walsten Air, sincere condolences to the Turner family.

My deepest condolences to the Turner family. I join my fellow Canadians here in paying tribute to a champion of this country and of honour, integrity, and justice. We are constantly reminded, in these troubled times, that "democracy does not happen by accident" -- we have to work diligently to keep it alive. These are words that we should all take to heart as we remember Mr. Turner.

My heartfelt condolences to Mr. Turner's family & friends. Top-notch public servant & Parliamentarian. My father worked as a volunteer on his campaigns in Ottawa-Carleton, brought me along to help, was then present at the 1984 Liberal Party leadership. On Sept. 2, 2020, I spoke to him briefly on an upcoming historic exhibit, to be launched in Ottawa. Although he could not contribute much, his parting words were: ‘’Good luck with the exhibit!’’. A true gentleman. Aurevoir M. Turner. Merci !

One of my fondest memories is receiving a Christmas card with your family photo after the campaign. May you be comforted by all of your family memories. With condolences and prayers.

Dear Geills and family,
i so delight in remembering afternoons on the lake with you and John during some summer days (over 25 years ago now). You were both such a delight to be with. I recall John's speaking with love and respect for his Mother and her work as a single mum.
It is wonderful to see how honoured John's work behalf of all Canadians has been throughout the country.
I think of you fondly and send you my warmest thoughts and condolences at this time.

May John Turner rest in peace. I remember meeting him in St. Andrew's many summers in the 1960s to 1970s. He was always kind and respectful to
everyone he met. My grandfather would prepare his employer's tennis courts
so Mr. Turner could play regularly. Mr. Turner appreciated by Gardner grandfather's talents. My condolences to the Turner and Norris family.

French, having had through my historical and political research some written and telephone exchanges with J. Turner, I consider that he was a politician of quality. His fight against the free trade agreement between Canada and the United States proved his attachment to the sovereignty of his country and showed that he was right to oppose this type of agreement which is harmful to independence national and democracy. May he rest in peace.
