Current status: In progress

Consultations were launched on June 22, 2026. The online questionnaire is currently available for all Canadians. Provincial and territorial governments will be consulted. In-person sessions across the country and thematic, sectoral and virtual sessions will be held until November 2026.

About the consultations

The Minister responsible for Official Languages, the Honourable Marc Miller, has a mandate to develop a new federal official languages strategy that sets out the Government of Canada’s key priorities. The development is based on a consultation process that will take place from June to November 2026. These consultations target the general public, official language minority communities, advocacy organizations, provincial and territorial representatives, federal institutions and organizations, as well as all official languages stakeholders in Canada.

With this new strategy, the Government of Canada is committing to moving toward substantive equality of official languages by highlighting strategic efforts that will have the greatest impact on Canadians, and to continuing its support for the vitality of official language minority communities and the promotion of both official languages. In addition, the Government is committed to working to protect French across the country, including in Quebec, and to supporting the promotion of official languages as a tool to advance our collective efforts in Canada and internationally. The government wishes to renew its action in official languages in order to reflect and highlight the strengths of our communities' rich diversity and the exceptional contribution of our official languages to the identity and future of our country.
