Canada 150 Sign to Be Unveiled in Calgary

CALGARY, May 11, 2017

The Honourable Bardish Chagger, Minister of Small Business and Tourism, on behalf of the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage, today unveiled a three-dimensional Canada 150 sign in Calgary to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation. Another 18 signs will be installed in provincial and territorial capitals and a number of iconic tourist destinations, creating vibrant gathering spaces across the country for Canadians and tourists alike to celebrate this special moment in Canada’s history.

The Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC), which is responsible for the project, will be installing the rest of the signs in the next few weeks. They will all be in place by June 21, 2017, just in time for celebrations across the country. The structures feature the word Canada and the number 150 in red.

Quick Facts

  • The 3D Canada 150 signs will be installed in the following communities: Victoria, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Banff, Regina, Winnipeg, Whitehorse, Yellowknife, Iqaluit, Toronto, Niagara Falls, Ottawa, Montréal, Québec City, Fredericton, Halifax, Charlottetown and St. John’s. They will be on display until at least the end of 2017.

  • All signs will be installed by the beginning of the Celebrate Canada period, which starts on June 21.

  • Canadians and tourists are invited to take pictures at these sites and share them on social media using the hashtag #3DCanada150.

  • The majority of the 3D Canada 150 signs will measure 1.82 m (6 feet) by 10.97 m (36 feet), and weigh 2722 kg (6,000 lbs.). These signs will be illuminated with different colours at night.

  • Smaller 3D Canada 150 signs, measuring 0.91 m (3 feet) by 3.05 m (10 feet), will be installed in the territorial capitals as well as the Brewster Gondola Summit in Banff.
