$4.8 Million to Renovate and Extend the Maison de la Culture de Sainte-Anne-des-Monts

News release

SAINTE-ANNE-DES-MONTS, Quebec, August 16, 2018 – The governments of Canada and Quebec are announcing financial assistance of almost $4.8 million to renovate and extend the Maison de la culture de Sainte-Anne-des-Monts.

The funding was announced today by the Honourable Diane Lebouthillier, Minister of National Revenue and Member of Parliament (Gaspésie–Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine), and the Honourable Pierre Moreau, Quebec Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Minister responsible for the Plan Nord and Minister responsible for the Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine region. Minister Lebouthillier made the announcement on behalf of the Honourable Pablo Rodriguez, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Multiculturalism.

After 30 years in operation, the equipment and facilities of the Maison de la culture can no longer meet the needs of residents and users. The poor and outdated layout of the various interior spaces and the building’s state of disrepair are affecting the sound operation of this cultural organization, as well as the safety of its users. This funding will allow for the building and equipment to be brought up to code, for spaces to be redesigned, and for the performance hall and the library to be extended. These renovations have been deemed urgent and essential.

Quotes

“Our government is pleased to help improve our cultural institutions so they are more appealing and functional, and can give residents of Gaspésie the best possible conditions in which to discover their region’s heritage, history and art. The Maison de la culture will now be able to benefit from better infrastructure to showcase home-grown talent.”

—The Honourable Diane Lebouthillier, Minister of National Revenue and Member of Parliament (Gaspésie–Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine), on behalf of the Honourable Pablo Rodriguez, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Multiculturalism

This initiative involves the complete refurbishment of a creative and festive space that plays an important role as a leading cultural facility in the Gaspé Peninsula. The extension and renovations will allow the Maison to better serve its clientele, improve the experience of visitors and artists, and meet accepted standards for performance halls and libraries in Quebec, in particular for performing arts programming. As a side benefit, this project will make our region more attractive and will stimulate our region’s economy.”

—The Honourable Pierre Moreau, Quebec Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Minister responsible for the Plan Nord and Minister responsible for the Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine region, on behalf of the Honourable Marie Montpetit, Quebec Minister of Culture and Communications and Minister responsible for the Protection and Promotion of the French Language

“This $4.8-million funding injection from the Government of Quebec and Canadian Heritage means that the Maison de la culture de Sainte-Anne-des-Monts will be able to continue its mission as a cultural leader on the north shore of the Gaspé. The funds will allow the Maison to strengthen its initiatives, further its development and continue to serve as a haven for emerging artists, as well as youths and teens.”

—Monique Campion, Cultural Director, Maison de la culture de Sainte-Anne-des-Monts
