Minister Rodriguez’s statement on Canadian Jewish Heritage Month

Statement

OTTAWA, May 1, 2019

Today, Canadians celebrate the beginning of Canadian Jewish Heritage Month.

On March 29, 2018, Canada’s parliament passed an act designating May as Canadian Jewish Heritage Month, in recognition of the contributions of Jewish Canadians to the social, economic, political and cultural fabric of this country.

Canada’s Jewish community is roughly 400,000 strong—making it the world’s fourth largest Jewish population in the world. Canadian Jewish Heritage Month is an opportunity to recognize the vitality and richness of Jewish culture in Canada and honour our Jewish citizens, who have contributed immensely in building the inclusive society that we enjoy today. As this month begins, I’d like to reaffirm our government’s commitment to fighting anti-Semitism, prejudice, and discrimination in all forms.

As Minister of Canadian Heritage and Multiculturalism, I invite Canadians of all backgrounds to learn more about the Jewish community’s history of courage and resilience through the centuries. Let’s celebrate the inspiring role Jewish Canadians have played—and continue to play—in our country.
