Biography

An artifact conservator by training, John Moses holds a diploma of applied arts in Museum Technology from Algonquin College. He is currently completing a Ph.D. in Cultural Mediations at Carleton University, where he also obtained a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies and an M.A. in Canadian Studies. He also performed a two-year internship in artifact conservation at the Canadian Museum of Civilization (now the Canadian Museum of History [CMH]) under the auspices of the National Indigenous Development Program.

John received additional training and work experience at the British Museum and the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian before rejoining the CMH. He held various positions at the CMH, including artifact conservator, assistant curator and, most recently, repatriation supervisor.

John is a member of the Delaware and Upper Mohawk bands from the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory. From 2009 until 2017, John was a policy analyst on Indigenous cultural policy and modern treaty implementation at the Department of Canadian Heritage. A Canadian Armed Forces veteran, he was also awarded the Special Service Medal for operations at CFS (Canadian Forces Station) Alert on Ellesmere Island in Nunavut.
