One-day lecture

Monday, October 24 to Friday, October 28, 2016

Five-day workshop: one-day lecture followed by four days of practical hands-on exercises. This workshop is aimed at conservators, in particular glass conservators, and requires background knowledge in conservation.

Workshop overview

The first day of the workshop, which will be opened to a larger audience, will be devoted to lectures on the conservation of glass. The presentations will cover the chemistry and technology of glass, archaeological glass including the conservation of glass in the field, preservation and deterioration of glass, ethics and aesthetics of glass, examination and documentation, cleaning, atmospheric deterioration of glass (crizzling), and the display, storage, packing and shipping of glass.

For the five-day workshop, participants will be taught how to set-up a laboratory for the conservation of glass; select materials, tools and chemicals including the choice of appropriate adhesives and consolidants; learn how to prepare Paraloid B-72 and mix epoxies; use the microscope for examination; clean glass mechanically and chemically, including stain removal; practice assembling fragments, applying adhesives and replacing lost fragments using different methods (both direct fills and detachable restorations); finish epoxy adhesives and fills and learn how to retreat previously restored objects. Each participant will practice these techniques on glass objects in the laboratory.

Participants of the five-day workshop will receive a copy of Conservation and Care of Glass Objects by Stephen P. Koob.

Instructor

Stephen Koob has been a conservator at the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York since 1998. He is a specialist in the conservation of ceramics and glass and has also worked extensively on archaeological excavations in Greece (the Agora and Samothrace) and Turkey (Sardis and Gordion). He has a Master’s degree in Classical Archaeology from Indiana University and a B.Sc. in Archaeological Conservation and Materials Science from the University of London’s Institute of Archaeology.
