COVID-19 update for correctional employees: December 31, 2021

This content is a message to Correctional Service Canada (CSC) staff from CSC's Commissioner.

As 2021 comes to a close, I want to wish you all a Happy New Year!

Let us welcome 2022 with optimism and hope, understanding that there are still some challenges that, together, we must work through.

As you know, the Omicron variant has resulted in a significant increase of the number of positive cases of COVID-19 across the country. Please follow all local public health recommendations and limit gatherings as much as possible for the remainder of the holiday season. It may not be the usual way to ring in the new year, but we need to help keep ourselves and our loved ones safe.

I would like to take this opportunity to encourage you to get your COVID-19 vaccine booster shot as soon as it is offered to you. Medical experts say that a third dose further strengthens the body’s immune system and helps prevent the serious effects of the disease.

Thank you once again for your continued hard work. You have continually adapted to this ever-changing environment, and this is a strong testament to your resilience. We are an organization that runs around the clock – 24 hours a day, 365 days a year – and we appreciate the efforts of those who are working through the holidays. Since the onset of the pandemic, you have continued to ensure the safety of each other and of the offenders in our care. Our work is people-centred, with a mission to keep our institutions and communities safe and secure. This comes with its share of challenges, but you consistently respond with professional expertise and dedication. Thank you for always rising to the challenge. It is inspiring.

A special thank you to those of you who worked, or are continuing to work, over the holidays. I would like to underscore your hard work and determination, and your continuing efforts to keep offenders healthy and our communities safe. You are making a difference in the lives of many. I am proud to work with people like you.
