COVID-19 update for offenders and their families: July 16, 2021

This content is a message to federal offenders and their families from Correctional Service Canada's (CSC's) Commissioner.

I am happy to report that there have been zero cases of COVID-19 among our inmate population for the past five weeks straight. This is positive news, and it is thanks to your efforts in keeping up with our infection prevention and control measures.

We are gradually transitioning to increased activities within our institutions. Please continue to:

We will continue to make decisions based on the latest public health data and evidence and keep you informed of any changes.

I appreciate your ongoing cooperation. I know it has been a tough time but we are seeing a light at the end of the tunnel. This is thanks to the many of you who got vaccinated! We now have almost 77% of inmates who received a first dose and almost 70% who received their two doses.

I also wanted to recognize the extreme heat and humidity we have been experiencing in several parts of the country. Please do your best to stay cool and hydrated.

On a separate note, during Pride Season (June to September), people come together to highlight the:

of LGBTQ2 communities across Canada. Kudos to inmates and staff at two of our institutions, Saskatchewan Penitentiary and Edmonton Institution for Women, who took the opportunity to show their support by painting the pride rainbow on their sidewalk entrances. This is very welcoming and inclusive!

Thank you again for doing your part to keep yourself and others safe and healthy.

Today is your day to do better than you did yesterday.
