COVID-19 update for offenders and their families: November 19, 2021
This content is a message to federal offenders and their families from Correctional Service Canada's (CSC) Commissioner.
I would like to start this week’s message by sharing that my thoughts are with those whose families in British Columbia who have been hit by the devastating floods and mudslides. Some people have been evacuated, many others are providing support, and my heart goes out to everyone whose homes and communities have been impacted by this.
We currently have an outbreak at Dorchester Penitentiary. Over 80% of inmates are now fully vaccinated, which is excellent. For those who haven’t received the vaccine, now is the time. It is the best thing you can do to protect yourself and others from becoming seriously ill.
Please continue to follow public health measures as it makes a big difference in limiting the spread of COVID-19 in our institutions. Wearing a mask, hand washing/sanitizing, and physical distancing remain very important measures to follow carefully. It is especially important to make sure that masks completely cover your:
- nose
- mouth, and
- chin
The flu shot is also now available. If you have not yet received either your flu or COVID-19 vaccine, please speak with Health Services. They can provide you with information and can also administer both vaccines at the same time. Thank you for rolling up your sleeves for the sake of your health and those around you.
Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20 pays tribute to transgender people who lost their lives to transphobic violence and highlights the hate crimes that trans and gender diverse people continue to endure. Everyone deserves to live free of discrimination and harassment. Consider how you can be more tolerant and accepting of other’s individual differences.
Restorative Justice Week is November 21 to the 28. For almost two decades, we have provided victim-offender mediation services nationally through the Restorative Opportunities Program. This program is available to you and victims as a way to promote dialogue and healing. Make sure to reach out to your parole officer if you would like more information.
The theme for Canada History Week 2021, November 22 to 28, is Indigenous History. This is an opportunity to learn more about the peoples and events that have shaped the Canada we know today. I encourage you to speak to the Elders and Indigenous staff and inmates in your institution to learn about and reflect upon the history of Indigenous peoples. What each of us can learn from this week is important in our path to reconciliation.
Thank you for your continued cooperation. I appreciate it very much.
It isn’t where you came from. It’s where you’re going that counts.
