COVID-19 update for offenders and their families: December 3, 2021
This content is a message to federal offenders and their families from Correctional Service Canada's (CSC's) Commissioner.
I am thinking of those of you with family and friends who are dealing with the aftermath of extreme heavy rain storms on both coasts. Last week, torrential rain washed out roads and caused extensive damage in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. This week, people in southwestern British Columbia endured more rainfall, while still recovering from the devastating flooding and mudslides caused by excessive amounts of rain. My thoughts are with everyone whose lives are impacted by these extreme weather events.
A special thank you to the inmates at Mountain and Mission institutions who filled over 6,000 sandbags to assist with relief efforts and donated them to communities in need. This has made a real difference!
There is a new COVID-19 variant in Canada called Omicron. This news may be concerning for some of you. Vaccinations remain key to minimizing the spread of COVID-19 and its variants.
We know that vaccinated people are less likely to become seriously ill from COVID-19 and better able to protect:
- themselves
- their friends
- family, and
- loved-ones
In addition to getting vaccinated, it is also important that you continue to:
- wear your mask,
- wash or sanitize your hands often, and
- keep a distance of two metres from others.
These measures will also help limit your risk of getting the flu this winter. Please speak to Health Services about the flu and COVID-19 vaccines/boosters.
Today, December 3, is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which promotes understanding of disability issues. I encourage you to be mindful of treating everyone with respect, which gives everyone, including those with visible and invisible disabilities:
- dignity
- rights, and
- a sense of wellbeing.
December 5 is International Volunteer Day! The active role they play in:
- our organization
- our institutions, and
- communities
is invaluable.
Their commitment and dedication make tomorrow better for all! Please join me in celebrating and recognizing the thousands of volunteers who dedicate their time to supporting us all.
Bath Institution in Ontario recently held an offender talent show that raised over $1,200 for Prostate Cancer Research in honour of Movember. There were 15 musical and comedy acts, involving approximately 30 offenders. The performances included everything from traditional Irish to rap songs. Thank you to those of you who helped raise money for this great cause!
Happy Hanukkah to those of you celebrating this week! I hope you take the time to speak with your family and friends, and do a virtual lighting of the menorah.
