COVID-19 update for offenders and their families: August 5, 2022

This content is a message to federal offenders and their families from Correctional Service Canada's (CSC's) Commissioner.

Thank you for doing your part as we see the contagious variants of COVID-19 still circulating. It is important to continue following our infection prevention and control measures to prevent the spread in our institutions. Please wear a mask when you are close to others and wash/sanitize your hands often. I also encourage you to get vaccinated and to speak with health care about keeping your vaccinations up to date as it helps keep you and others from becoming seriously ill if you get COVID-19.

August 9 is International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, which is an opportunity to raise awareness and protect the rights of Indigenous populations around the world. We can benefit greatly by learning from and actively supporting Indigenous Peoples and communities.

CSC is committed to working collaboratively with our Indigenous partners and stakeholders to improve the healing journey of Indigenous People. We recognize the inherent value of reconciliation, and I encourage you to embark on or continue your own learning journey on the path to reconciliation.

August 9 is also National Peacekeepers’ Day. This is an opportunity to honour Canadian peacekeepers, past and present, involved in peace operations around the world that promote democracy, human rights, and respect for rule of law. I have great pride and respect for those who have bravely made important contributions in countries moving from conflict to peace.

Education plays a big role in preparing for reintegration into society. CSC offers education programs that can help you improve your skills and further your knowledge. Participating in education programs will help you prepare for correctional programs and increase your chances of gaining and maintaining employment upon your release. I congratulate those who take advantage of learning opportunities, and I encourage everyone to look for educational resources and continue setting goals for yourself.
