COVID-19 update for offenders and their families: August 19, 2022

This content is a message to federal offenders and their families from Correctional Service Canada's (CSC's) Commissioner.

This week I had the opportunity to visit Edmonton Institution (EI) and the Edmonton Institution for Women (EIFW). I met with the inmate committee at EI, and with the Institutional Welfare Committee Chair at EIFW. We discussed the positive aspects as well as the challenges faced by inmates at each. I visited the Structured Intervention Unit and program space at EI, and had a demonstration of the new body scanner installed at EIFW – I had the opportunity to try it myself. It always means a lot to meet people and speak to them in person.

I visited the Federal Training Centre in Quebec in the spring, and Joyceville Institution in Ontario earlier this summer. I am very happy to be able to attend our sites again. Stay tuned for updates from more visits.

We continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation in communities across the country. We know that your efforts to prevent the spread of the virus in your institution by wearing masks and washing/sanitizing your hands often are effective. As well, keeping up to date with vaccination boosters is also making a positive impact. Please let Health Care staff know if you are not feeling well.

Since reopening on May 21, the Penitentiary Museum in Kingston has welcomed over 11,000 Canadian, American, and international visitors. The Friends of the Penitentiary Museum introduced some new products to the museum gift shop, including Comeback Snacks popcorn and a variety of CORCAN goods—honey and maple syrup from Joyceville Institution and Indigenous handicrafts from Warkworth Institution. These fundraising initiatives support the museum’s operations, which raises awareness about corrections in Canada and reintegration.

Thank you for your ongoing cooperation.
