COVID-19 update for offenders and their families: February 17, 2023
COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses continue to circulate in our communities, and we still have cases in our institutions. You can reduce your risk of becoming seriously ill and limit spreading the viruses by staying up to date with your vaccines and following our infection prevention measures. If you have symptoms, or have questions about vaccines, please speak with someone in Health Services.
I wish to remind you of the importance to build a support network while incarcerated. A positive network in the community will increase your chances for successful reintegration. There are many volunteers and other community members that offer a variety of different support options. Talk to your Social Program Officers or Case Management Team. They can discuss the options available to you and help you connect with these resources.
Wednesday, February 22, is Pink Shirt Day, in support of anti-bullying. Bullying is an issue we see in all spheres of society and it is not acceptable. On this day, and every day, let us be conscious of how we treat one another. Together, we can create a healthy environment that prioritizes:
- respect
- communication
- inclusion
- tolerance
- acceptance
- kindness
- empathy
- support, and
- understanding
For example, if you face an issue, talking it through with others is always the best way to resolve conflict.
We are now in the third week of Black History Month. Please take a moment to reflect on what it means to be more inclusive and what actions you can take to make a difference around you.
This year’s theme is “Ours to Tell”. It is about telling your stories and listening to others to build mutual awareness and understanding. In keeping with this, I really like this week’s quote below. It unpacks the term “privilege” and helps us reflect on the benefits of putting ourselves in someone else’s shoes.
Privilege isn’t about what you’ve gone through; it’s about what you haven’t had to go through. And right now, we are in a time that is calling on us to learn the stories that we don’t know. — Janaya Khan
