Commissioner's update for offenders and their families: May 12, 2023

May is Canadian Jewish Heritage Month, an opportunity to:

about the countless contributions Jewish Canadians have made, and continue to make to communities across Canada. The month of May was chosen because of its meaning to the Jewish community around the world. It often coincides with Shavuot, or the Feast of Weeks, which celebrates the spring harvest and commemorates the revelation of the Torah.

Wednesday, May 17 is International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia. This day is a reminder that everyone deserves to feel proud and accepted regardless of their:

I encourage you to speak up, whether you are a victim of, or witness, acts of discrimination or harassment. Such behaviour is not tolerated in CSC institutions. 

I would also like to congratulate the Drumheller Institution CORCAN program participants who recently made donations to the community. The participants of the welding program built and donated a fire pit to the local Lions Club. Similarly, the participants of another program built flower box planters, which were donated to Alberta Health Services. 

Learning and practicing hands-on skills is not only rewarding but can also create better opportunities for employment upon release. I am proud that participants of CORCAN’s programs are giving back to the local community.

I understand that this day can be difficult for mothers who are unable to see their children as often as they would like to. I encourage everyone to take time to remind the maternal figure in your life of the important role they play.
