Canadian Safety and Security Program
This area of expertise is managed through Defence Research and Development Canada's (DRDC) Canadian Safety and Security Program (CSSP), in partnership with Public Safety Canada. The CSSP aims to strengthen Canada’s ability to anticipate, prevent/mitigate, prepare for, respond to, and recover from acts of terrorism, crime, natural disasters, and serious accidents through the convergence of Science and Technology (S&T) with policy, operations and intelligence.
Priorities
Threats and Hazards
Developing capabilities to enhance Canada’s ability to prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from chemical, biological, radiological-nuclear and explosives (CBRNE) threats, natural disasters and serious accidents.
Critical Infrastructure Interdependencies (physical and cyber)
Developing capabilities that contribute to the resiliency, reliability and protection of Canada’s physical and information technology (IT) facilities, networks, services and assets.
Border and Transportation Security
Developing capabilities that help to identify and stop terrorists and criminals by enhancing the surveillance, monitoring and disruption and interdiction techniques, technologies and processes available to border and transportation security authorities.
Emergency Management Systems & Interoperability
Developing capabilities that enhance the performance, integration and interoperability of national and international public safety, security and emergency management capabilities and supporting systems (people, tools and processes).
Scientific and Technical Support to Operations & Operations Analytics
Developing agile capabilities that help public safety and security officials to reduce the risks associated with major planned events, natural disasters, serious accidents and criminal and terrorist activities. Developing these capabilities includes coordinating access to scientific and technical knowledge and expertise, and on-site and virtual analytical support, which provides evidence-based advice for policy development, and emergency and security planning and operations.
S&T Transition Innovation
Exploring and implementing innovative ways to transition S&T knowledge and technologies to end-users.
Emergency Responder Safety and Operational Effectiveness
Developing capabilities that help police, firefighters, paramedics and specialized responders to conduct operations safely and effectively. This priority focuses on improvements to detection and decontamination technologies, forensic techniques, personal protective equipment, explosives countermeasures, and associated standards and processes.
