News Release
Ottawa, ON, April 5, 2016 - The Minister of Democratic Institutions, the Honourable Maryam Monsef, today issued the following statement on the occasion of the first report by the Independent Advisory Board for Senate Appointments on the transitional phase of the new Senate appointments process:
“I wish to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all of the members of the Advisory Board for their excellent work and careful review of all applications during the transitional phase of the new Senate appointments process.”
“I also want to acknowledge those organizations and individuals who engaged in the process and especially those who were willing to be considered.”
“The Government will carefully review the Advisory Board’s first report to the Prime Minister on the transitional phase of this new process and consider its contents in establishing the permanent phase which will soon be launched.”
“This report – and future reports from the Advisory Board – will be of great value, as we work towards a more open and transparent government.”
“The successful conclusion of the transitional phase of the process has brought us closer to achieving the goal of a less partisan and more effective Senate. The permanent phase will address the remaining vacancies, as well as vacancies arising in the future, and include an application process open to all eligible Canadians.”
