As the G7 Summit convened in Kananaskis, Alta., in June 2025, it was not just a gathering of world leaders, but a significant moment that brought together military and law enforcement personnel in an essential collaboration.

At the forefront of this effort was 1 CMBG, alongside 38, 39, and 41 CBG. Together, the four formations provided the soldiers that formed the LTF responsible for ensuring the summit’s security in partnership with the RCMP as the lead security agency.

What was Operation CADENCE?

The mission, dubbed Op CADENCE, highlighted the vital role the military plays in supporting safety during high‑level international events. This operation required not only deploying skilled soldiers, but also an impeccable level of co‑ordination and communication between the military and RCMP forces.

LTF Commander Col Sean French acknowledged the military personnel’s efforts.

“Your vigilance and professionalism created the conditions for a safe and secure G7 Summit—an event whose full impact may never be fully understood,” he said.

This recognition speaks volumes about the dedication exhibited by LTF soldiers in ensuring security protocols were understood and executed flawlessly.

The partnership between the LTF and the RCMP was foundational to the operation’s success.

“The presence and persistence of the Land Task Force throughout the closure of the Controlled Access Zone formed the foundation upon which security was built,” Col French noted.

This close collaboration allowed for a comprehensive approach to security, whereby military personnel supplemented and enhanced the capabilities of civilian law enforcement, ensuring every possible scenario was anticipated and managed effectively.

Environmental stewardship

Operating in a diverse and wildlife‑rich environment came with its own set of challenges. LTF soldiers engaged with the local community, local wildlife and event attendees with utmost respect and care.

“We engaged Canadians with care and respect, meeting the unique challenges of operating in a wildlife‑rich environment without incident,” Col French remarked.

This level of professional conduct was crucial not only for operational success, but also for fostering positive community relations.

High preparedness and professionalism

The four‑day event was the culmination of months of meticulous planning and co‑ordination, where the LTF played a central role, Col French said.

Soldiers engaged in rigorous training exercises and simulations, illustrating the high degree of readiness and adaptability that marked the deployment.

In an ever‑changing global landscape, the dialogue created during the G7 Summit was invaluable.

“In an uncertain world, the importance of dialogue among some of the globe’s most influential nations cannot be overstated,” Col French said.

The environment created by Op CADENCE facilitated these critical discussions, allowing leaders to connect in a secure setting, reinforcing the role of national defense and security efforts in international relations.

Throughout the operation, 1 CMBG’s professionalism was evident.

“The seamless way the force moved into the valley and maintained operations is a testament to our professionalism and our ability to project and sustain a capable force,” Col French said.

This seamless operation showcased not just military readiness, but also the effectiveness of co‑operative efforts with the RCMP.

Mission success

Ultimately, the success of Op CADENCE underscored the readiness of 1 CMBG and its partners to step into complex and high‑stakes situations.
