- Footnote 1
Incremental Department of National Defence (DND) Cost is the additional costs for personnel and equipment that are directly attributable to the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) operations. More specifically, incremental costs include the additional cost to deploy troops and equipment and to provide ongoing maintenance and support during the applicable operation, in addition to any specialized training required for the operation. DND does not include costs such as, but not limited to: regular force salaries , indirect equipment costs, and the full capital acquisition cost of major equipment, unless procured specifically for the mission with no life expectancy post operation. Due to the dynamic nature of CAF operations - surplus from one named operations may be used to offset pressures from another named operation. Where the operation is funded through Treasury Board Submissions (TB Subs), only the additional new funding received is reflected as incremental cost of operations. Existing departmental funding is largely used to cover fixed, non-incremental costs such as regular force salaries, employee benefits, indirect cost of equipment, etc.
