(Shelley) With the impacts of the pandemic, we have all had to adapt to protect ourselves and others from the virus. Fortunately, we are still able to enjoy the outdoors and physical activity.
Joining me virtually, as we get some fresh air and exercise, is Canada Army Run Race Director and triathlete Major Lesley Quinlan to talk about the Canada Army Run and the 2021 event.
Hi Major. Thanks for joining us. So tell us a bit about Canada Army Run: Virtual.
(LQ) Hi, thank you. Virtual runs are very much the same as an in-person run except you can do it anywhere, anytime, whether it be in Canada or abroad. And this year for Canada Army Run, you can join us from the 10th to the 19th of September, and once you're finished completing the distance of your choice, you go to our Race Roster platform to upload your results, and you’ll also receive a finisher coin.
(S) How can people register?
(LQ) Registration is really easy. We just launched the new and easy to navigate website. So you can go to armyrun.ca, pick the distance that you'd like to complete and register right there. Early-bird registration is available until the 31st of March. So make sure you register now to take advantage of those great savings.
(S) How does Canada Army Run: Virtual convey the unique military experience of the traditional Canada Army Run?
(LQ) The traditional Canada Army Run really stands alone as no ordinary race. Normally we have a canon at the start line, Soldier On members are piped in with bagpipes. With COVID-19 and preventive health measures, unfortunately, we're not able to offer an in-person event this year, but we're still going to offer military flavor to the event.
The shirts for 2021 are going to be revealed later this spring and each participant will receive a unique challenge coin as part of their finisher kit. We also celebrate Canadian military history. This year, the general theme will be "ubique" which is Latin for "everywhere". You really can do the Army Run from everywhere. More specific themes will also be revealed soon. Deceased military members will also continue to be honoured with the return of our Remembrance Row Virtual.
(S) Thanks very much for joining us today, Major Quinlan. Anything else you’d like to add?
(LQ) Canada Army Run: Virtual isn't limited to just September. We want people to know that starting next month, we are going to be offering monthly training runs, so you can join us and train with us. We also want people to know that participants are encouraged to fundraise for Support Our Troops and Soldier On. So when you register, you can create a fundraising page and ask your friends, family and coworkers to help you raise funds for these great causes. So to be part of Canada Army Run: Virtual, please go to armyrun.ca and register today.
