The Royal Canadian Navy departs for Ukraine on SEA BREEZE 2017

July 10, 2017 – Ottawa – National Defence / Royal Canadian Navy

The Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) will deploy a contingent of 14 personnel comprised of divers and support staff and staff officers from Fleet Diving Unit Atlantic and Maritime Forces Atlantic to support SEA BREEZE 2017 (SB17), multi-national training event in Odessa, Ukraine, led by the United States and Ukraine Navies from 10 to 21 July. 

SB17 will train and exercise partners in maritime operations support information sharing and awareness of the maritime domain. The exercise will enable and enhance collaborative naval operations amongst maritime security partners in the Black Sea.

SB17 is an excellent opportunity for the Canadian Armed Forces to build and strengthen interoperability and combat effectiveness between Canada’s military and our US, Ukraine, and international maritime allies.

Quick Facts

  • The Canadian Armed Forces routinely conducts international maritime training with like-minded nations. Joint training events such as SEA BREEZE 2017 allows the CAF to strengthen ties and understanding amongst global partners and improves our ability to successfully work together on multinational operations and missions.

  • During Sea Breeze 17, the RCN, USN, Ukraine Navy, and multi-national partners will work together to exercise maritime security, safety, and stability operations with an emphasis on anti-submarine warfare, infrastructure protection, amphibious operations, and cyberspace defense missions. 

  • There will also be a Maritime/Amphibious component that will train in conjunction with Ukrainian Law Enforcement Agencies (Coast Guard, National Guard, Ministry of Internal Affairs, and Security Service of Ukraine).

  • These opportunities provide a chance for partner nations to demonstrate our readiness to effectively respond to a range of complex security threats at home and abroad.
