Minister Sajjan welcomes appointments to the Military Police Complaints Commission of Canada

News release

March 22, 2018 – Ottawa – National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces

Defence Minister Harjit S. Sajjan today welcomed the reappointment of a part-time member and a new part-time member to the Military Police Complaints Commission of Canada (MPCC). The reappointment and new appointment include:

  • Joseph Donat Michel Séguin – reappointed as part-time member for a term of three years, effective March 6, 2018; and
  • Bonita Laine Thornton – part-time member for a term of three years effective March 12, 2018.

The MPCC is a federal quasi-judicial body established by the Parliament of Canada under the National Defence Act. Independent from the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces, it was created to review and investigate complaints concerning the Military Police with objectivity and fairness.

These appointments are part of the Government of Canada’s rigorous new approach to Governor in Council appointments. This approach uses open, transparent, and merit-based selection processes that result in the identification of high-quality candidates who truly reflect Canada’s diversity.
