Statement from the Minister of National Defence and the Minister of Veterans Affairs on the Occasion of International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

Defence Minister Harjit S. Sajjan and Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence Seamus O’Regan issued the following statement for International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination:

“March 21 marks International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. In 1966, the United Nations General Assembly called on the international community to increase its efforts to eliminate racial discrimination and to participate in a program of action to combat racism.

“On this day, we recognize the importance of embracing diversity, and of promoting respect and dignity for all Canadians.

“Canada is a country that welcomes people of all cultures, ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientation and beliefs. We celebrate uniqueness and create opportunities for all Canadians.

“Our Government is committed to building a workforce that reflects Canadian ideals of equity, diversity, respect and inclusion. Diversity is Canada’s greatest strength. We must respect equity and fairness by hiring more people from diverse cultural backgrounds, creating healthy and dignified work environments and creating opportunities for all.

“Diversity not only allows us to be more effective in our missions, it brings us closer to our goal of better reflecting Canada’s diverse population.

“We thank all Canadian Veterans who have served our country, as well as those who continue to serve in the Canadian Armed Forces and the Department of National Defence today. Let us continue to take these steps forward and strengthen our commitment to build a country that embraces equality and opportunity for all.”
