Corrosion Detection in Ships Sandbox Call for Applications Re-launches
The Corrosion Detection in Ships Sandbox (CDIS), previously postponed due to COVID-19 restrictions, has re-launched its Call for Applications. The Sandbox will focus on solutions that might better detect and assess corrosion behind surface coatings onboard Royal Canadian Navy platforms in order to reduce operational impact and improve the effectiveness of scheduled and unscheduled maintenance.
Location: Centre for Ocean Ventures & Entrepreneurship, Halifax, Nova Scotia
Time: April/May 2022
How to apply: Sign up for an E-Post account by November 30, 2021 in order to make the submission deadline of 16 December, 2021 at 14:00 EST.
Applications for this sandbox will be open to all innovators, including those that did not apply previously. The pandemic situation will continue to be monitored and plans adjusted as necessary to conduct the Sandbox in a safe manner.

Faster, Stronger, More Secure: Advancing 5G capabilities and concepts for Defence and Security
In response to the rapid development and deployment of commercial 5G technologies, the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces (DND/CAF) are seeking to stimulate the application of advances in technologies for 5G and beyond to defence and security problems.
IDEaS’ newest Innovation Networks challenge Faster, Stronger, More Secure: Advancing 5G capabilities and concepts for Defence and Security aims to develop research clusters (called Micro-nets) to leverage existing work on commercial applications to address DND/CAF needs with applications for:
- Architectures for Defence and Security Operations;
- Assured Performance and Security;
- Applications and Sensors.
Since 2018, IDEaS funded 12 micro-networks through the 1st and 2nd Call for Proposals (Advanced Material and Autonomous Systems), investing more than $18 million in research and development under this element alone. Funding is through a non-repayable contribution, with up to $1.5 million available per Micro-net over a three year research period.
The deadline to submit a letter of intent to the 5G micro-network is December 7, 2021. To learn more about the application process, visit our website.

Competitive Projects keep rolling
Our latest Competitive Projects call for proposals (CFP#4), which focused on a number of domains including autonomous vehicles, lightweight modular armour, acoustic and visual detection, cybersecurity and data analysis, has now awarded 52 $200K contracts with innovators. On top of these new contracts, 23 contracts worth $1 million have been awarded as part of our second call for proposals (CFP#2). These CFP#2 contracts complete component 1B funding for this call. The milestones reached add up to IDEaS funding fast and moving science and technology through our innovation pipeline.
The Pop Up City Contest Round three in the books
Six contest teams from across Canada recently went head-to-head at the Pop Up City Contest pitch event. Contestants presented their solutions that integrated water, waste and energy systems for relocatable temporary camps for troops. Over 100 DND/CAF and DRDC representatives attended the event, as well as representatives from other government departments. Up to three lucky winners will each receive up to $1.5M each to build a prototype of their solution. Get a flavour of the competition by watching the wrap up video, which was recently featured in Defence Team News. Winners will be announced in Fall 2021.
