How to manage inappropriate online interactions

Critical Thinking

The online world we interact in is huge. Yet not everyone who interacts within our digital community has honourable intentions. These actions can cause emotional and physical turmoil.

If something does not seem right – and if you are unsure if the behaviours are appropriate, always err on the side of caution and report it.

Duty to Report

There is a responsibility that all cadets, and staff have called Duty to Report. When a member is aware of an incident, outside of normal behaviour or conduct (harassment, abuse, misconduct, or other serious incidents) they are required to report it to their immediate supervisor without delay. In serious cases this means directly to the Commanding Officer of the Cadet Corps/Squadron, or CTC.

Duty to Respond

When an incident has been reported through the Chain of Command, there is a Duty to Respond. This means the Commanding Officer (or delegated member) must respond and take all actions necessary to support the identified member in all meaningful ways and ensure procedural fairness is followed.

You will always be supported in reporting incidents, and help make our digital environment safe.

Cyber Bullying

If you, or someone you know, is being bullied, and if it is safe to do so, be a bystander and stand up for them. Report the bullying, or help the victim to do so to your Chain of Command, trusted adult, or if necessary the local police services.

Protect Yourself

  • Never share your passwords or personal information
  • Don’t open e-mails from an address you do not recognize
  • Never share personal information on Cadet365
  • Don’t allow people into meetings that you don’t know
  • Be a good digital citizen and be a leader in demonstrating what right looks like in a virtual environment

What Should You Report?

  • People you do not recognize
  • Emails you suspect are phishing or malware
  • Cyberbullying
  • Inappropriate images or photos
  • Interactions that make you uncomfortable
  • Anyone outside the Cadet365 environment asking to join meetings, this can be determined if they have a @Cadets.gc.ca or @cdt.cadets.gc.ca email address
