Benefits for CAF members

Members of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) are entitled to a wide range of services and benefits. Depending on your status of work, you and your family can expect full or partial coverage for:

Career development

The CAF will support your professional development throughout your career by providing continuous education and training opportunities. Whether you are an Officer or a Non-Commissioned Member, you will be given the tools necessary to improve your skills and advance through your career.

Some examples of career development training include:

Pension plans

There are two pension plans available for members of the CAF. Regular and Reserve Force members will join one of the two plans.

For Regular Force members

Regular Force members automatically join the Regular Force Pension Plan when they enrol. Contributions to the plan will be deducted from their pay after they join.

For Reserve Force members

Reserve Force members must first qualify to participate in the Reserve Force Pension Plan. Reservists may qualify to participate in the Regular Force Pension Plan if they work on a full-time basis continuously, over a period years.

Reserve Force Pension Plan

Reserve Force members join the Reserve Force Pension Plan automatically after earning 10% of the Year's Maximum Pensionable Earnings (YMPE) in two consecutive 12-month periods. Pension contributions will start to be deducted from their pay automatically when they join. The contribution rate under the Reserve Force Pension Plan is lower than the rates that apply under the Regular Force Pension Plan.

Reservists in the Regular Force Pension Plan

Reserve Force members automatically join the Regular Force Pension Plan once they accumulate 1,674 days (55 months) of service in a 60-month period. Pension contributions will be adjusted automatically when they qualify to participate to reflect the increased rates.

Health and dental

All members of the CAF are eligible for health and dental care benefits.

For Regular Force members

The CAF covers the health and dental care of its Regular Force members from the time they enrol to the time that they are released. Benefits for your family will begin three months after you join.

For Reserve Force members

Members of the Reserve Force may benefit from the CAF medical and dental care, depending on their duty status.

Full-time (180 days and more) and deployed members of the Reserve Force receive the same medical and dental care as Regular Force members.

For more information about medical and dental benefits for CAF members, consult the Canadian Force (CF) Spectrum of Care document.

Vacation

The CAF gives vacation time to its full-time members to encourage their physical and mental well-being. The amount of vacation time you will receive depends on a number of factors.

For Regular Force members

Members of the Regular Force start with 20 vacation days per year. After five years of service, you will receive 25 vacation days per year. After 28 years of service, you will receive 30 vacation days per year. You can request your vacation anytime, depending on training and operational requirements.

For Reserve Force members

Full-time and deployed Reservists receive one paid vacation day for each 15 consecutive calendar days of service. You can receive a maximum of 24 vacation days per year. You may also receive extra time off during that same period. Part-time Reservists do not receive vacation time.

View the CAF Leave Policy Manual for more information about your vacation time.

Parental leave

Parental benefits give you the freedom to spend time at home after the birth or adoption of a child. Regular Force members and Class “B” or “C” Reservists who have completed at least six months of service in the CAF are entitled to maternity leave and parental leave.

Eligible members will receive maternity or parental benefits under the Employment Insurance Act or the Quebec Parental Insurance Plan and the Government of Canada will top up your benefits to 93 percent of your regular salary.
