Quebec and Ottawa support growth for Oasis Animation

Creation of 100 jobs in the 2D animation industry

Montréal, June 4, 2018 – The Government of Quebec and the Government of Canada have granted a total of $1,256,912 in financial assistance to Oasis Animation, a Montréal 2D animation studio, to support an expansion and export project evaluated at $3,330,000, which will create 100 jobs.

David Birnbaum, Member for D'Arcy-McGee, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Education, Recreation and Sport (elementary and secondary education) and Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister responsible for Higher Education (college and university education), acting on behalf of Dominique Anglade, Deputy Premier, Minister of Economy, Science and Innovation and Minister responsible for the Digital Strategy, and François Blais, Minister of Employment and Social Solidarity, made the announcement today.

The project will help the studio double its production capacity and set up a training program for 2D animation artists. The company also plans to develop new markets outside Quebec by participating in trade shows and increasing its Web presence.

A $577,500 loan has been granted by the ministère de l’Économie, de la Science et de l’Innovation (MESI) through its ESSOR program for the purchase of computer equipment. In addition, MESI has awarded the enterprise a $38,412 financial contribution through its Programme Exportation (PEX), to support the company’s export project, which aims to capture the Canadian, United States, Asian and French markets.

The ministère du Travail, de l’Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale (MTESS) is providing $207,000 in funding through the business component of the Mesure de formation de la main-d’œuvre to train Oasis Animation’s artists. MTESS is also investing $9,000 in financial support under the Mesure Concertation pour l’emploi.

Lastly, through its Quebec Economic Development Program, Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions (CED) has granted a repayable contribution of $425,000 to support the company’s expansion project.

  • Oasis Animation offers 2D animation services internationally. Founded in 2003, the company is located in Montréal and employs over 90 people. Its partners include such giants as PBS, Gaumont, Corus and Radio-Canada.

  • The goals of the PEX (website in French only) include raising awareness among Quebec businesses of the growth potential associated with exports and subsequently helping them develop and diversify foreign markets.

  • The goal of the ESSOR program (website in French only) is to support investment projects in Quebec to enhance competitiveness and productivity, create jobs and ensure sustainable development.

  • The Stratégie nationale sur la main-d’œuvre 2018-2023 (website in French only), which was announced on May 22, 2018, is providing investments of more than $1.3 billion over the next five years. The strategy includes 47 measures carried out by 11 government departments and agencies and has two main objectives: more jobs for more people and the creation of an environment fostering the acquisition of skills needed for the rapid transformation of Quebec’s economy.
