Government of Canada investment of more than $18 million supports tourism recovery in Peterborough, Kingston and Southeastern Ontario

News release

Over 180 projects supported to enhance recreational facilities, parks and trails to attract visitors to region

May 24, 2023 – Kingston, Ontario

In southeastern Ontario, tourism attractions and destinations like art galleries, film festivals, parks and quaint main streets play a vital role in the region’s economy and cultural identity, promoting the unique heritage and natural beauty of the region. The Government of Canada understands the importance of the tourism sector and is committed to supporting communities as they build towards a strong future from coast to coast to coast.

During Economic Development Week, we are highlighting the important investments that have been made across Ontario to support the tourism industry. Between 2022 and 2023, the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario) delivered nearly $140 million through the Tourism Relief Fund (TRF) to help tourism-oriented businesses and organizations across southern Ontario recover from the impacts of the pandemic and safely welcome back visitors.

As part of this investment, $18.1 million was delivered to 185 tourism businesses and organizations in Southeastern Ontario, providing memorable experiences for visitors and positioning the region for success.

For example, Prince Edward County Winegrowers Association received more than $440,000 to create and host the first-ever Élevage Winter Wine Festival. This festival attracted 500 visitors to visit local winery venues, and to sample wine and cider from 20 different producers. Guests also enjoyed culinary delights from local chefs that highlighted the region’s rich history of using preservation and fermentation techniques to survive and thrive in the winter months.

TRF support also made a difference in the community of Norwood, where Canada’s Dinosaur Park and Reptile Sanctuary received $250,000 toward the development and creation of a new museum near Norwood, Ontario. The new educational venue will feature dinosaur fossils, a feathered dinosaur exhibit, as well as exhibits of rescued live reptiles.

Also with this Government of Canada support, Regional Tourism Organization 8 (RTO 8) and Region 9 Regional Tourism Organization (RTO 9) provided non-repayable contributions of up to $100,000 to tourism businesses and organizations in the region.

This included support for Environmental Action Bobcaygeon, which received nearly $100,000 through RTO 8 to enhance the eco-tourism experience in the Bobcaygeon area through the installation of a kayak rack, water refill station, an electric vehicle charging station, bike share maintenance, and the development of a heritage walking tour app.

These investments have been crucial in helping local businesses and organizations welcome more visitors and build stronger, more vibrant communities.
