Alex Gunaseelan: Program Engineer

“What motivates me is knowing that the work I do has a direct impact on the mining industry and Canadians at large.”
Since 2016, Alex has been working at Environment and Climate Change Canada, in Quebec, for the Industrial Substances and Chemicals Branch. If there’s anything involving data and project management, you’re bound to find Alex there! Since joining the department, Alex has witnessed an increased presence of youth employees, and as a result, youth networks have grown significantly. One of Alex’s fondest memories was acting as the Master of Ceremonies for an event hosted by the National Youth Network where he facilitated a Q&A session between the then Deputy Minister and students at ECCC.

Here are a few random facts about Alex:
- What was your first job? McDonalds, flipping burgers.
- If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be? I’ve always wanted to visit Singapore, so I’d start there.
- If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be? Roti and curry, the spicier, the better.
- If you could go back in time, what year would you travel to? 1998, so I can get in early to buy Google stocks. Google was founded then and, apparently, it’s doing pretty well now.
- What is your favourite flavour of ice cream? Neapolitan, it’s three flavours in one!
- What form of public transportation do you prefer? (air, boat, train, bus, car, etc.) I grew up taking the subway/metro to go everywhere and anywhere and still love taking it.
- Summer or winter? Winter.
- If you could share a meal with anyone, living or dead, who would it be? Trevor Noah. I’d love to pick his brain more on his life story, how he views the world, and how he masters every accent he does in his stand-up routines.
- What's your favourite holiday? Easter.
- What's your favourite fast food chain? McDonalds, they have the best coffee!
