“At ECCC, I have an opportunity to contribute to the ecological transition of Canada. That’s an aspect of my work that really motivates me.”

Meet Dr. Simon Guertin-Armstrong, an Evaluation Analyst at Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC). With the department for less than a year, Simon has been planning and performing evaluations of various departmental programs to review their design and performance. Before coming to work at ECCC, he completed a doctorate in political science and worked in the program sector at the Treasury Board Secretariat of Canada. Simon enjoys being part of an effective team and interacting with colleagues across the federal public service on a daily basis. Each evaluation project allows him to discover a new program and constitutes a new challenge, which he finds very stimulating.

Here are a few random facts about Simon:

  • If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? I would set off on a sailboat toward one destination and then another, whatever took my fancy, to meet others and learn about their cultures.
  • What’s your favourite flavour of ice cream? Pistachio gelato at Mantovani 1946!
  • What are your hobbies? Cooking (butchery, deli meats, fermentations, etc.), cabinetmaking (indoor and outdoor furniture, kitchen accessories, etc.), physical activities (biking, running, aikido, weight training, etc.), reading, and playing video games.
  • What’s your favourite movie? There are too many excellent films to choose just one, but Seven Samurai by Akira Kurosawa had a big impact on me.
  • Which do you like better – summer or winter? Summer, for the warm weather; nature, which is in full swing; water getaways; lounging about at the beach; and barbecues.
  • How many pairs of shoes do you have? Too many to count!
  • Where do you see yourself in ten years? In a position in the federal public service, where I will be contributing to accelerating and successfully implementing Canada’s double ecological and economic transition to the best of my abilities.
