Sylvia Kiel: Financial Assistant, Corporate Service and Finance Branch

“I really enjoy the challenging aspects of finance and my wonderful colleagues.”

Sylvia Kiel has worked in various fields of finance during her 22-year career with Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC). Her first job was with the Meteorological Service of Canada doing data input of invoices. Today, she works out of Edmonton, Alberta as a Financial Assistant in the Corporate Services and Finance Branch, where she tackles the challenges and intricacies of finance.

Throughout her career, Sylvia has felt supported and respected by her supervisors. From training student employees, to accepting new work assignments in order to gain new skills and insight, Sylvia has had many opportunities for growth and development in her career. An added bonus has been having friendly colleagues, who bring energy and fun to the workplace. Sylvia fondly reflects on the camaraderie at work, and the efforts made to celebrate special days and events. Her many years at ECCC have been enjoyable, which she attributes to her wonderful colleagues.

  • What was your first job? Cashier at an outdoor pool in Fort Saskatchewan.
  • If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be? Austria or Germany.
  • What is your favourite game or sport to watch and play? The NFL’s Green Bay Packers.
  • If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be? Any German or Mexican dish. 
  • If you could go back in time, what year would you travel to? Anywhere, anytime!
  • What are your hobbies? Bauernmalerei (German folk art painting), dancing with a local German dance group, and gardening.  
  • What is your favourite flavour of ice cream? Mint chocolate chip.
  • How many pairs of shoes do you own? Too many.
  • What's your favourite movie? The Bridges of Madison County.
  • Where do you see yourself in 10 years? A “snowbird” in Arizona.
