Emission estimation calculators, booklet 1: chapter 16
The substances of concern for wood working are Criteria Air Contaminants and Speciated Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC). These calculations can be broken down into three sections related to wood working processes: Painting Related, Natural Gas Consumption, and Sawdust Related.
To calculate the total emissions for all processes related for wood working sum the emissions for each substance across all processes where applicable.
Use Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) to determine what individual VOC species are released from various wood finishing processes.

Calculation for Part 4 VOC Releases
A mass balance approach is recommended. First calculate the mass of each product used. The mass can be calculated using the following formula:
M = (V x D)/1000
- M = mass used [tonnes]
- V = volume used [liters]
- D = density [kg/liter]
Next, sum the mass of the volatile component of each product used.
E = (M x C)1 + (M x C)2 + …
M = mass used [tonnes];
C = % volatile organic compound (VOC)
Note: C and D are found on the product MSDS sheet
Natural Gas Consumption
N = amount of natural gas burned [million cubic meters]
If you know the amount of natural gas burned in Giga Joules the amount of natural gas burned in million cubic meters (m3) can be calculated by the following equation:
N = H/0.0386/1000000
where, H is the amount of natural gas burned in Giga Joules.
Calculation for Part 1 Releases and Part 4 Releases from Combustion Sources
E = (N x EF)/1000
- E = emissions [tonnes]
- N = amount of natural gas burned [million cubic meters]
- EF = emissions factor

Q = Weight of Sawdust Removed [tonnes]
R = Removal Efficiency of Dust Collectors [%]
Calculation for Part 4 Releases from Dust Collector Releases
The equation to calculate the emissions is:
E = Q/R - Q
where, E is emissions in tonnes.
Note on Emissions Factors
The default emission factors are used in the table above, however if you have a site specific emission factor you would prefer to use you may enter it in the emission factor column. If you choose to insert your own emission factor ensure that the units have been converted accordingly.
The emission factors used in this spreadsheet are based on uncontrolled emissions. If you are using an emission control device you will have to adjust the emissions calculated by this spreadsheet according to the following formula:
Controlled Emissions = Uncontrolled emission x ((100 - control efficiency)/100)
