Beer Brewing

The substances of concern in the production of beer are Criteria Air Contaminants (CAC) and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).

Suggested estimation methodology: Emission Factor

The general equation for emissions estimation is:

E = A x EF

where:

  • E = emissions
  • A = activity rate
  • EF = emission factor

Input Data

The activity rate parameter (A) varies depending on the substance and emission factor (ex. Amount of beer packaged (thousand cubic meters (m3)), amount of grain processed (tonnes), grain dried (tonnes), or bottles washed (thousand cases). Refer to the Processes and EF Units in the tables below, and consult AP-42 Chapter 9.12.1 - Food and Agricultural Industries: Beverages: Malt Beverages for further detail if needed.

Note on Emissions Factors

The default emission factors are used in the table above, however if you have a site specific emission factor you would prefer to use you may enter it in the emission factor column. If you choose to insert your own emission factor ensure that the units have been converted accordingly. 

Except where indicated, the emission factors used in this spreadsheet are based on uncontrolled emissions. If you are using an emission control device you will have to adjust the emissions calculated by this spreadsheet according to the following formula:

Controlled Emissions = Uncontrolled emission x ((100 - control efficiency)/100)
