Government of Canada Invests to Support Economic Development and Cultural Tourism in Greater Sudbury

News Release

March 3, 2016 – Sudbury, ON – Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario – FedNor

Sudbury MP Paul Lefebvre, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and Minister responsible for FedNor, today announced a Government of Canada investment to create employment and support key sectors of the local economy, including cultural tourism, economic development and business growth.

A FedNor investment of $240,340 will enable the Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario (TNO) to enhance the economic vitality of the official language minority community in Greater Sudbury and attract new visitors to the area through a three-year project. Specifically, the investment will be used to create a new development officer position; offer a surtitle service to allow Anglophones, Francophiles and exogamous families to enjoy TNO plays in real-time; modernize the ticketing system; improve facilities to increase rental opportunities; and promote the TNO over a wider area and in both official languages.

Quick facts

  • The funding announced today is provided through FedNor's Economic Development Initiative (EDI), which helps foster the development of new expertise in innovation, economic diversification and business growth in Northern Ontario's Francophone communities (the region's official language minority community) and capitalize on economic opportunities made possible through linguistic duality.
  • The Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario (TNO) presents annual theatre programming to a diverse audience. It is dedicated to theatrical creation and the development of Francophone arts in Northern Ontario and across the country. Throughout its 44 years of existence, the TNO has garnered numerous local, provincial and national awards and distinctions, including the Premier's Award for Excellence in the Arts in 2014.
