Government of Canada Investment Promotes Strategic Planning in Two First Nation Communities

July 19, 2016 – Sioux Narrows—Nestor Falls, ON – Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario – FedNor

The Honourable Bob Nault, Member of Parliament for Kenora, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and Minister responsible for FedNor, today announced a FedNor investment of $20,500 to help develop a community strategic plan for the communities of Windigo Island and Regina Bay on Lake of the Woods in Northwestern Ontario.

The FedNor contribution will enable the Northwest Angle #37 First Nation to hire a consultant to survey and engage band members in both communities, assess their infrastructure with a focus on economic development potential, and identify economic opportunities and priorities.

  • The funding announced today is provided through FedNor's Northern Ontario Development Program, which supports projects that promote sustainable community economic development, enhance business development and growth, and facilitate innovation.
  • Northwest Angle 37 First Nation is an Ojibway Nation whose traditional territory and reserve lands are located on the shores of Lake of the Woods. The First Nation consists of two distinct communities on opposite sides of the lake: Windigo Island and Regina Bay near Sioux Narrows.
