Northern Ontario’s mining supply and service sectors generate an estimated $5.6 billion annually and support an additional 23,000 high-quality jobs throughout the region. The Government of Canada recognizes the strategic importance of these key sectors and is stepping up efforts to help businesses start up, scale up and create high-quality jobs that support families and sustainable growth throughout the region.
Terry Sheehan, Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages and Minister responsible for FedNor, and Mayor Carman Kidd, City of Temiskaming Shores, today announced the roster of 67 businesses and organizations that will take part in the seventh annual Northern Ontario Mining Showcase (NOMS) at the 2021 Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) International Convention. PDAC 2021 will take place virtually from March 8th to 11th.
Led by City of Temiskaming Shores, NOMS will help connect delegates from around the globe with mining and supply service companies from across Northern Ontario. The virtual platform will provide access to a broader audience of business leaders, investors and industry colleagues worldwide. As the largest pavilion at PDAC, NOMS will also help Northern mining supply and service companies scale up, enhance their digital presence, create jobs and increase trade, both domestically and internationally.
As a returning exhibitor, Drillco is one of many businesses that have capitalized on the unique marketing and promotional potential offered by the PDAC conference. In fact, this North Bay-based manufacturer of specialized mining equipment credits its participation in NOMS for increased sales and global awareness of its cutting-edge, clean-tech drilling system. Many of NOMS’ other participants include not-for-profit organizations looking to increase investment opportunities in the region. This includes the Nishnawbe Aski Development Fund, an economic development corporation dedicated to supporting the growth of Indigenous-owned businesses in Northern Ontario.
“The Canadian mining sector has shown its resilience and strength throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. With many communities across Canada dependent on this important sector, our government is investing to ensure that local businesses and organizations can adapt to the new and quickly evolving realities of the global marketplace. Our investments will continue to support their efforts to strengthen Northern Ontario’s economy and create good quality jobs.”
- The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages and Minister responsible for FedNor
“The Government of Canada recognizes the strategic importance of Northern Ontario’s mining supply and service sectors to the regional economy. That is why we invested $500,000 to help the City of Temiskaming Shores deliver the 2021 Northern Ontario Mining Showcase in support of local businesses and organizations. Last year alone, NOMS was credited with helping to create 93 jobs, develop 200 new partnerships, and generate more than $12.8 million in sales.”
- Terry Sheehan, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages and Minister responsible for FedNor
